SkateMCR’s Aims

Here are the general aims of SkateMCR in an easy-to-remember acronym: C.O.D.E.

CELEBRATE
SkateMCR celebrates skateboarding in Manchester. We aim to to this by creating skate competitions and jams, organising a skate film festival and a Manchester skate festival.

OPPOSE
SkateMCR opposes the byelaws banning skateboarding in Manchester’s City Centre. We will oppose the byelaws by public protest, petitions and efforts to educate the council and public about the true positive nature of skateboarding. We believe skateboarders have an equal right to use public spaces responsibly, along with other citizens.

DEMAND
We demand that any Council in Greater Manchester consults with us whenever they attempt to create future skate facilities. Too often has public money been wasted on badly designed and un-usable skateparks. We will form advisory groups consisting of skaters to design and oversee the building of any skate facility.

ENHANCE
We want to see the skate scene in Manchester enhanced by gaining a concrete skate plaza and an extension to the Pump Cage under the Mancunian Way. We will lobby the relevant groups or people to get such a plaza built either at the gasworks, or at the new media city development at salford quays. We will also support efforts to get funding for the extension to the Pump Cage.

BIG DAY AT THE PARK

February 10, 2007

Pump Cage GroupBig respect to the guys behind the Pump Cage Extension group. They’re applying for funding to get the extension built and need you’re help.

BIG DAY AT THE PARK, 10 FEBRUARY, FREE ENTERANCE, BE THERE AT 12, BIG SESSION, GOOD VIBES, BBQ!

Get down to the Pump cage for that. It’s great to see skaters getting on with making their scene better!

New Year and New Ideas

With 2007 upon us, it’s a good time to talk about some of the ideas people have had for this collective. So in no particular order, here is a rough list:

Abolish the byelaw banning skateboarding in the City Center.
The City Center has been skated since skating began, and it will always be skated because of the in-grained street skating culture in Manchester. Street skating adds to a vibrant and alive City, so celebrate our sport and give us back our public spaces!

Manchester Skate Film Festival.
This may be the best idea to go with first. It celebrates our scene and culture and will be open to everybody which will help educate people about skatings creative, positive and social side. It would also give us some credibility as we start out. We could have a VIP screening and invite Councillors, MP’s, etc. along and do a brief presentation too. We could use the Cornerhouse for showings since they do these types of things often, or try and organise it to run over a week and have showings in lots of cinemas.

Extension to Mancy Way skatepark making it 3 times larger.
This would make it one of the biggest and best parks in the North West. Enough said!

Regular Skate Night.
Like the old SubTub, a monthly night in a bar with good music, beer and a mini-ramp.

Build a concrete Plaza somewhere near the City Center.
Manchester’s skate scene is sorely lacking a concrete Plaza and would really benefit from it. Some have suggested building it at the Gasworks. But with limited available land space in the City Center, perhaps the north side of Deansgate which is actually Salford may be a better bet at getting a location. Others have suggested building it in Whitworth Park, off Oxford Road, and Salford Quays with all the regeneration going on there.

Manchester Skate Festival.
The idea here is to have a weekend with ramps, blocks, etc., set-up in different places around Manchester’s City Center (like St. Ann’s Sq., Alberts Sq., URBIS, Piccadilly, etc) or just the Northern Quarter. These then get skated at different times of the day, and at the other times, pro teams tour the different spots. This will be a public spectacle and will help educate people about skatings creative, positive and pro (not anti) social side.

Assorted Fund Raising Events/Comps.
We have no money. And we need money to do some of this stuff.

Now it’s your turn. Leave comments here with your thoughts on the above ideas or with your own ideas. We need your feedback!
