The final competition in ASBO (April Skate Bonanza Ohyeah) was a great success! Over 100 skaters came down to the Projekts Mancunian Way Skatepark to enjoy the weather, the skating and the competition and every body walked away with a little something courtesy of around £1,000 worth of products donated by our sponsors.
Congratulations to the TWOmanchester shop team who walked away with the coveted ASBO Ashes Trophy after coming 1st in 3 of the 4 competitions throughout April.
Team Biddulph were triumphant after a draw with Team Rocket and won £100 and a bag each suffed with goodies. Both teams had to skate together for another 5 minutes and Team Biddulph were crowned the winners of the “16 & Under” category by the roar of everybody’s support. Team Rocket who came 2nd got £50 and bags of treats too.
Unbelievably Team Weed and Team Resin drew in the “Over 16″ category and had to skate again for another 5 minutes after which the roar for Team Weed crowned them champions. They won £150 and bags stuffed with stuff, and Team Resin won £100 and bags of products too.
Then came the highest sticker plant comp, best trick on the quarter pipe and best trick down the rail with some cash and products won by Eddie, lil’ Nick and Chris Barrat amongst others.
Many thanks to ASBO’s main sponsor DVS, the MCR Shops: CAST, NOTE ProjektsMCR and TWOmanchester, and our other sponsors: Flip, Heathen Skateboards, Santa Cruz, Indepenent, Unabomber, Rollersnakes, Death Skateboards, Lowlife and Ezekiel.
Also, thanks to everyone who helped organise ASBO - you know who you are.
Check out our SkateMCR Flickr photo page for photo’s from yesterdays ASBO Final. Some photo’s still look crappy because I am having to use my phone camera still - has any one got a spare digital camera they want to donate to SkateMCR? Also, we have hit the limit of 200 photo’s for a free Flickr account so if you wanna donate £13 and get us a Flickr pro account so we can share more photo’s feel free!
Here is the final score board for each category:
1st place = 3 points, 2nd place = 2 points and 3rd place = 1 point
r/u = runner up
The ASBO Final is upon us - this Sunday at the Projekts PumpCage under the Mancunian Way. And this is what the shops have been fighting for: The ASBO Ashes Trophy!
Below are the totals for each Team so far in each category. 1st place earned 3 points, 2nd place earned 2 points and 3rd place earned 1 point.
This Sunday, at the final, the points which the teams win will be added to their current total and the teams which come 1st and 2nd in the “16 & Under” and “Over 16″ categories will win cash prizes for winning ASBO!
So who has to pull their skills out of the bag on Sunday to win their category? Here are the totals for each Team so far in each category:
Checkout this fun little video by Yujishimobay of the ASBO competition at Central Skatepark on 8th April 2007. Nice stuff Yuji!
Yuji wasn’t able to be at the NOTE street comp on the 15th, but Sean Lomax was and he video’d most of it. When he has put that together, we’ll add it here - I’m looking forward to seeing the race down Deansgate!
Last nights ASBO competition at CAST was a real success! Loads of great tricks were landed on the mini-ramp meaning “Points and Prizes” (Danny McCourt on the mic) were handed out.
Go to our Flickr page for our photo’s of the night. Unfortunately, my digital camera was stolen last week so the pictures look crappy since they were from my phone. If anyone has a spare digital camera which they want to donate to SkateMCR, let us know!
Thanks to Felix, Vic , Ben Perry and Danny for helping to do the comp.

What a great day yesterday was! Brilliant weather, lots of great tricks and a real good atmosphere. It was good that we all got to skate the Gasworks together too, if the rumours are true that the council are gonna board up the place for some flats to built in 2 weeks! Thanks go out to Joe, Splodge, Cinch and Sam for helping to organise it.
The NOTE competition yesterday had more of a free-for-all feel, so the teams in the different categories didn’t really get to compete together, which is not such a bad thing - variety is the spice of life! This means that we have no results for the “16 and under” category this week, but you will be able to win more points and prizes next Sunday!

Councillor Pat Karney,
Thank you for your response to “ASBO” in the M.E.N. article on the 10th April 2007. We were encouraged by some of your statements and firmly disagree with others.
In the article you said “In Manchester we have provided facilities that most other cities haven’t…”. Most cities around the UK have multiple skateparks of some description which have been provided by that City Council. While some skate facilities in Manchester are good (eg. Mancunian Way Skatepark, Platt Fields Skatepark), some are shockingly bad (eg. Chorlton Skatepark, Crowford Park Skatepark).
Manchester is like most other cities in that it has provided only a few quality facilities. A number of towns around Manchester have built concrete Skate Plaza’s including Clitheroe, Crewe and Stoke. Manchester has a vastly larger skateboard community than any of these towns, yet does not have a concrete Skate Plaza and instead, the City Council’s largest skatepark is far too small for the amount of skateboarders in the city.
Councillor Karney, you went on to say “…unless the skateboarders can come up with a scheme that doesn’t involve harming the public or damaging places it will be very unlikely we will rescind these bylaws.” We welcome your attitude that the bylaws are not set in stone but instead, there is a small chance that they may be rescinded. We believe that it is the bylaws that are anti-social, not those who are criminalised by them.
We greatly appreciated your comment “But because skating is a big part of Manchester culture…” It rightly affirms skateboarding as having a large and important place in this city - it is refreshing to hear someone from the City Council admitting so!
Your following comment “…I am quite prepared to meet with SkateMCR to talk through the issues.” is very welcome and we look forward to arranging a meeting with you in the coming days.
The following article was in the Manchester Evening News Newspaper yesterday (10th April) following ASBO on sunday at Central Skatepark:
They’re playing for Ashes - the “ASBO Ashes”
* Skateboarders in protest at curbs
* They stage contest with a cheeky title
Chris Osuh
The longest skate competition in the country got off to a flying start over the Easter holiday.
The marathon Manchester event spread over every weekend this month, is in protest at council efforts to curb skaters from playing on the streets.
Organisers SkateMCR have cheekily named the event ASBO - short for April Skate bonanza Ohyeah - a jibe at Manchester’s tough public order policies.
Scores of adrenaline junkies met at the newly-opened Central Skatepark, a former photographic studio at Mason Street, Ancoats.
Teams of different ages went head to head to see who could perform the most extravagant “aerials”, “grinds” and kickflips.
Workers from four of the city’s skate-shops whizzed around the parks halfpipes, bowls, ramps and obstacles to compete for the coveted “ASBO Ashes” prize.
Organiser Ben Gibbs, 26, of Moss Side, said: “Everyone had great fun and people brought video cameras, so some great tricks were recorded.
“The ASBO event has been organised to raise the profile of our collective, SkateMCR, set up to celebrate skateboarding and oppose the bylaws banning skateboarding in the city centre.
“The council’s approach criminalises young people who are doing something positive, creative and social”
Manchester introduced bylaws prohibiting skateboarders from causing a nuisance to passersby and from riding in parts of the city centre in 2001 after boarders caused £80,000 of damage to Exchange Square. Pedestrians were injured in “crashes”.
SkateMCR want the council to consult with boarders on design of facilities and extend the £75,000 skatepark on London Road.
City centre spokesman Coun Pat Karney said: “In Manchester we have provided facilities that most other cities haven’t and unless the skateboarders can come up with a scheme that doesn’t involve harming the public or damaging places it will be very unlikely we will rescind these bylaws.
“But because skating is a big part of Manchester culture, I am quite prepared to meet with SkateMCR to talk through the issues.”
The ASBO compatition at Central Skatepark held yesterday was a great success! Lots of people came, fun was had by all, and some great tricks were pulled out the bag! Thanks to Harry, Stu and Chris for helping to organise it.
