Go Skateboarding Day Manchester Video

The protest we planned for Go Skateboarding Day at URBIS was unfortunately rained off, but it didn’t stop plenty of Skaters getting out to skate. Most seemed to be found at the Pump Cage during the afternoon where I recorded some footage with my mobile phone!

Central Skatepark then hosted the premiere of the new Element Skateboards video - “This Is My Element” - which was amazing.

Checkout this video covering Go Skateboarding Day 2007 in Manchester:

Update2 On Go Skateboarding Day

More information has surfaced for Go Skateboarding Day on 21st June 2007 - just over 24 hours away! So here’s what’s happening on Thursday:

Projekts

To celebrate Go Skateboarding Day, Projekts are letting you skate for free at the Pump Cage from 3 - 8pm on Thursday! They are also offering 20% off hardware at their shop too.

Central Skatepark

Central are hosting the premiere of the new Element Skateboards video - This Is My Element - at 8pm on Thursday. In honour of Go Skateboarding Day, they are also offering entry to their park for only £5 for the whole day - including the premiere!

SkateMCR

We have suggested that everybody gets together at URBIS from 5pm to have a big skate and protest. Where you go from URBIS is up to you!

It looks like Go Skateboarding Day is gonna be great wherever you go in Manchester!

A final word about what Go Skateboarding Day is all about from the official website:

On June 21 skateboarders around the globe will celebrate the pure exhilaration, creativity, and spirit of one of the most influential activities in the world by blowing off all other obligations to go skateboarding!

Skateboarders everywhere will hold fundraisers, contests, protests, demo’s, they’ll skate across cities, gather in skateparks, stream into their local skate shop and some will even revel in the solitary act of skateboarding alone, all bringing together the skateboarding community in the grind heard around the world.

Update On Go Skateboarding Day

New plans have emerged for Go Skateboarding Day on 21st June, next Thursday.

time-feature.jpgCentral Skatepark are hosting the Northern premiere of “This is my Element” - the new Element Skateboards video - at 8pm on Go Skateboarding Day. In honour of the day, they are charging £5 entry for the whole day, including the premiere in the evening.

So, plans are to still meet at URBIS at 5pm and have a skate in protest of the byelaws and just to have fun. Then people who want to go see the Element premiere can go up to Central Skatpark before 8pm, and those who don’t want to go to the premiere can do what they want - as long as they skate!

Skateboarding in 2012 London Olympics?

It seems very likely that skateboarding will be in the London 2012 Olympics (from Times Online):

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has held talks in Switzerland to agree a timetable for its inclusion, with the International Cycling Union (UCI) proposing to adopt skateboarding as a discipline, enabling skateboarders to circumvent the strict rules that normally apply to new sports hoping to join the Olympics.

A spokesman for the UCI said yesterday that the organisation had been approached by senior figures in the IOC “to help skateboarding by adopting it for the Olympic Games — and we will do it”.

Jacques Rogge, president of the IOC, is understood to be keen for skateboarding to be part of the 2012 Games after the success of snowboarding at the Winter Games in Turin and the likely impact the sport would have on television ratings among the young.

To read more see About.com:Skateboarding, Yahoo Sports, and another Times Online article.

What do you think? Is this a great idea because it will bring much more money into the skate scene and encourage more people to start skateboarding Or do you think skateboarding will lose it’s rawness and it’s heart as it becomes mainstream adopting rules and regulations?

Go Skateboarding Day - June 21st

June 21, 2007
5:00 pmto9:00 pm

Go Skateboarding Day is fast approaching and we wanna organise something for skaters to do together. We wanna get everyone to skate the streets in protest that they legally can’t, and as a celebration of skatboarding in Manchester!

IASC-banner_200x50new2.gifSo, current plans are for everyone to meet at 5pm at URBIS, we’ll skate there for a bit then skate down Deansgate to Castlefield, then move on to the Gasworks. It is pretty similar to the street ASBO cometition arranged by NOTE, exept there is no competition and no cash prizes, just the joy of skateboarding with each other - which is what the day is all about anyway!

It may be the last chance to skate URBIS for the summer before they cover the place in sand creating an “urban beach” - so lets make it a good’n.

Check out the Go Skateboarding Day video to get a feel about what other cities have done to celebrate skateboarding.

Sumo Session at Central Skatepark

June 15, 2007

Central Skatepark are hosting their Sumo Session all nighter on Friday 15th June. The shenanigans they promise include some Sumo suits for y’all to skate and/or fight in! Sounds like it will be a great photo caption opportunity!

Burnt To The Ground Skate Area Success

Burnt To The Ground was brilliant, drawing large crowds and great artists like Mr. Scruff, Arthur Brown and Broke ‘n’ English.

The Skate Area was a great success with over 60 skateboarders turning up to skate the Mini-Ramp.

Prizes donated by Billabong were won for the highest Ollie, highest Hippie Jump, a game of S.K.A.T.E. and the best trick on the Mini-ramp.

Many times during the day there was a heaving crowd of spectators watching the action on the mini-ramp and cheering the skaters on. The vibe was relaxed and fun with some great tricks being landed.

I hope the spectators went away with an appreciation for the skills involved in skateboarding and realising that skaters aren’t a bunch of yobs, but nice guys, passionate about their skating and getting on with each other.

Big thanks to Element and Billabong who sponsored the Skate Area, and to Ultimate Ramps for bringing and constructing the mini-ramp at cost price. Thanks also to NOTE who provided the hurdle, Rob who volunteered to help out, and to Nikki who got us involved with Burnt To The Ground in the first place.
